When picking Oscars, bluffing your way through the picks in one category can be the difference between office glory and defeat. One category that I often do not pay much attention to when making my picks is Short Film (Live Action). This year I decided to try and learn about the films before Oscar night. Below I present information on each film and predict a winner.

Ausreisser (The Runaway)
When the six-year-old son he never knew he had shows up on his doorstep one morning, a novice father tries to find the boy’s absent mother. This is the first Academy Award nomination for Ulrike Grote, who is German and won the Student Academy Award 2004. Ausreisser earned a 6.8 rating on IMDB with 9 votes cast.

Cashback
A London art student with a vivid imagination explains the fine points of getting through the night shift at a dull job. These are the first Academy Award nominations for Sean Ellis and Lene Bausager. This dramedy has a lot of nudity and earned a 7.8 rating on IMDB with 84 votes cast. It also starts the actor who played Oliver Wood in the Harry Potter movies.

The Last Farm
An elderly man keeps a secret from the outside world as he reacts to the possibility that he will no longer be able to remain on his isolated farm. These are the first Academy Award nominations for Rúnar Rúnarsson and Thor S. Sigurjónsson. This Icelandic movie earned at 8.9 rating on IMDB with 7 votes cast.

Our Time Is Up
A therapist who learns he has only six weeks to live begins treating his patients with a dose of brutal honesty. These are the first Academy Award nominations for Rob Pearlstein and Pia Clemente. This comedy stars Kevin Pollack and earned an 8.4 rating on IMDB with 14 votes cast.

Six Shooter
As he travels home by train after his wife’s death, a grief-stricken man finds an already terrible day taking some bizarre turns for the worse. This is the first Academy Award nomination for Martin McDonagh. This comedy stars Brendan Gleeson and earned an 8.3 rating on IMDB with 27 votes cast.

Out of all the movies, The Last Farm, Our Time Is Up, and Six Shooter have the highest ratings. Furthermore, Our Time Is Up and Six Shooter are great led by great actors. So, it comes down to, looking at how many people will have seen the film. Although Cashback has had the most votes on IMDB, I think that its x-rated content will turn away voters. Twenty seven people have voted for Six Shooter in IMDB, as opposed to 14 for Our Time Is Up. I am going to go out on a limb here and predict that the more talked about film, Six Shooter, will take the award.
