Three films are nominated for best visual effects: the Chronicles of Narnia, King Kong, and War of the Worlds. A year ago, I would have assumed Revenge of the Sith to be a lock for best visual effects, but it didn’t make the cut. Both Chronicles of Narnia and War of the World had contributions from George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic. To make my pick, I consulted the awards list for the Visual Effects Society(VES) Awards. Two of the three pictures nominated in this category were also nominated by VES: Chronicles of Narnia and King Kong. So, I will whittle my choices for nomination down to these two films. Second, you have to consider that the judges for best visual effects only look at a 15 minute clip. So, the question becomes, over a 15 minute span, which film was more impressive? I say King Kong. Another reason why I favor Kong is that Peter Jackson’s three Lord of the Rings films all won the visual effects award their respective years. The Jackson history, Kong’s amazing effects, combined with the fact that the voters are probably tired of handing trophies to Industrial Light & Magic, makes Kong the likely winner.
