2006/2007 Oscar Predictions: A First Look
This is an old article. Please visit our December predictions for an updated analysis.
Here at Oscarfrenzy, it’s never too early to start looking ahead to next year’s awards. Whereas 2005/2006 marked the year of the socially-conscious, small budget independent film, this next year will likely signal a return to traditional big studio, big star, big budget Hollywood movie-making. We’ll take an in-depth look at Best Picture and offer bold predictions for all the major categories.
BEST PICTURE:
The nominees will be…
Breaking and Entering (The Weinstein Company)
The Departed (Warner Bros)
Flags of Our Fathers (Dreamworks/Paramount)
The Good Shepherd (Universal)
Little Children (New Line)
“Breaking and Entering” stars Jude Law and Juliette Binoche and is directed by Anthony Minghella (The English Patient, Cold Mountain). It is the story about an encounter between a thief and an architect which somehow forces the architect to reevaluate his life. Minghella has been brilliant in every film he’s directed and the Academy may reward him this year, three years after he got snubbed for the vastly underrated Cold Mountain. The story sounds rich and complex and could have a similar impact as The Constant Gardener. May be a little too small for the win, however.
“The Departed” is Martin Scorsese’s eagerly awaited remake of the Hong Kong thriller “Infernal Affairs.” It stars a dream cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson. For those not familiar, the story revolves around two spies, an undercover police detective and a gangster, who must infiltrate each other’s organization. When their identities are compromised, each must scramble to reveal the other first before they are caught. Scorsese has received Best Picture nods for his last two films (Gangs of New York, The Aviator), so another nomination seems extremely plausible. The subject matter, however, may not be “important” enough to win the ultimate prize. It’ll be close, but we’ll predict Marty to be a bridesmaid once again.
“Flags of Our Fathers” features another director who’s garnered Best Picture nominations for his last two movies, the legendary Clint Eastwood (Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby). It’s the story about the lives of the men who raised the flag at Iwo Jima during World War II. Eastwood’s been such an effective and efficient director he’s basically surpassed Speilberg as the King of Hollywood. Needless to say, it would seem crazy to bet against him. Somehow though, I have my doubts “Flags” will walk away with Best Picture. A mere two years after Million Dollar Baby – it just seems too good to be true, even for bulletproof Dirty Harry. Besides, war movies seem a little disfavored in recent years, after a slew of mediocre offerings including The Alamo, The Last Samurai, and Troy.
“Little Children” is obviously the sleeper choice here. Starring Kate Winslet and Jennifer Connelly, it is the story about suburban mothers in a pristine neighborhood who raise their children up to go to Harvard or Yale. One day, one of them starts to have an affair with a lawyer, who is living a secret life of his own. Hmmm. Sounds a little like Desperate Housewives. The story, based on a well reviewed book by the author of Election (Tom Perrota), is half comedy and half drama. Todd Field, who directed 2001 Best Picture nominee “In the Bedroom” is at the helm. It probably has no chance to win the movie of the year, but a story like this can add some much needed spice to a Best Picture race.
Last, but certainly not least is “The Good Shepherd,” directed by Robert De Niro and starring Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie. It is the story of a man who devotes his entire life to the CIA. The film focuses, in large part, on the costs and sacrifaces he endures to his personal and professional life as he helps to build the organization to what it is today. Part fact and part fiction, “The Good Shepherd” is bound to generate some controversy given today’s political climate. Matt Damon has been on the verge of a truly breakout role and Robert De Niro may follow in the footsteps of George Clooney, Mel Gibson, Clint Eastwood, and Kevin Costner as actors turned great directors. Going head to head against Scorsese and Eastwood may seem daunting, but we’re placing our bets that the Academy will want to honor a fresh face. The story as well, about one man’s journey and struggles, is the type often worthy of Oscar recognition (A Beautiful Mind, Forrest Gump). We’ll predict “The Good Shepherd” to be the 2006/2007 Best Motion Picture of the Year.
Other Predictions:
Best Director: Robert De Niro for “The Good Shepherd.” (runner-up: Martin Scorsese-”The Departed.”)
Best Actor: Matt Damon for “The Good Shepherd” (runner-up: Jude Law-”Breaking and Entering.”)
Best Actress: Naomi Watts for “The Painted Veil.” (runner-up: Kate Winslet for “Little Children.”)
Best Supporting Actor: Albert Finney for “A Good Year.”
Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Connelly for “Little Children.”
LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

best pictur:(according to me)
V FOR VENDETTA
Half Nelson
Little Miss Sunshine
Scanner Darkly
Babel
among them V FOR VENDETTA is my bBest pick.
what an amazing movie.
anyways it wont win any awards for sure.
and iy’s obvious that Helen Mirren will win the best actress
no matter whom i prefer.
Meryl Streep has 99% chances of winning if she gets nominated for the best supporting actress catagory.
Kate Winslet seems to be a strong contender.
I think Natalie Portman is too.
(goya’s ghost)
and for the actor well i dont know.
I dont think Departed should even be nminated because it’s a remake of a Hong Kong movie.
it’s not a Oringinal Hollywood product.
moreover it is said that Departed isnt as good as the original.
anyways may the best contender win.
Best supporting actress is Carmen Maura for Volver
if meryl streep is in the best actress category, she will definitely loose to helen mirren or penelope or kate winslet. Comedic performances don’t win best actress oscars. Ig she is in the best supporting actress category however, she might stand a chance but then we have cate blancett in the good german, babel and notes of a scandal( she’s splendid in all three and might get nominations) and jennifer hudson of dreamgirls.
Hello! It’s Meryl Streep for best actress. Hello again!!
I will agree wit matteo on his best supporting actress predictions.I watched babel and i was truly amazed at the talent of the japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi. Let’s hope the academy recognizes real talent and not friends(clint eastwood)
To each their own, but man… laughing out loud at some of y’all’s picks… and here for your scrutiny are mine…
PICTURE
Babel, Dreamgirls, Flags of Our Fathers, The Departed, Little Miss Sunshine (Dreamgirls will win)
ACTOR
Forrest Whittaker (The Last King of Scotland)
or Leonardo DiCaprio (The Departed)
ACTRESS
Helen Mirren (The Queen) or Meryl Streep (Devil Wears Prada)
SUPP. ACTOR
Jack Nicholson (The Departed) or Eddie Murphy (Dreamgirls)
SUPP. ACTRESS
Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls) or Rinko Kikuchi (Babel)
DIRECTOR
Thrice tie for Martin Scorcese (The Departed), Clint Eastwood (Flags of Our Fathers) and Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) … which I think Condon will triumph.

Best Picture-The Pursuit Of Happyness
Best Actor-Will Smith
Best Supporting Actor-Will Smith’s Son
How on earth is A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints being overlooked in all categories???
as far as best picture goes, i think it will be flags of our fathers…I saw the movie and it had oscar written all over it, but not necessarily for best director. I think martin should definitely take it this time and best actress should go to kate winslet for little children coz she damn well deserves it…not to sure about actors but the buzz seems to be favouring forest whitiker and supporting role going to mr. pitt for babel – i think he gave a solid performance
best picture- babel
best director- martin scorsese(the departed)
best actor- peter o’toole(venus)
best actress- kate winslet (little children) or jennifer lopez (bordertown)
best supporting actor-brad pitt (babel)
best supporting actress-jennifer lopez (el cantante) or jennifer hudson (dreamgirls)
best animated film- cars
you’re spot-on the prediction for best actress. good job.
I don’t think that Pirates of the Caribbean is likely to get nominated for best picture. However, Depp for best actor is a possibility.
you have some good predictions but i think you may have missed Pirates of the Caribbean for best movie and Johnny Depp for best actor nominees! DUH!
sorry marcos but best animated film is going to cars not flushed away.kate winslet is good in little children but the film’s buzz is dying down.
best actor-forest whitaker, brad pitt, peter o’toole
best actress-helen mirren shd definitely win for the queen.penelope is still young and she will get other chances but this is definitely helen mirren’s year.
Picture = Little Children (Todd Field)
Director = Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu (Babel)
Actor = Peter O’Toole (Venus)
Actress = Kate Winslet (Little Children)
Supporting Actor = Brad Pitt (Babel)
Supporting Actress = Carmen Maura (Volver)
Adapted Screenplay = Little Children (Todd Field)
Original Screenplay = Volver (Pedro Almódobar)
Animated Picture = Flushed Away
Hollywood compensation year…it´s got to be Scorcesse all the way. Not as powerful as Raging Bull or as slick as Goodfellas (both of which should have won oscars) The Departed is still way ahead of other contenders. But then you never know.Since when has Hollywood favoured quality over nepotism.
Flags is so cliched it shouldn´t even be in the running
God help us all if the mediocre and yawningly predictable Flags… wins anything!
Almodover,Cruz and F.Whittaker get my vote but if its ´´awards for my friends´ as usual expect another sickenly patriotic sppevch from Boring Clint
Flags of our feathers is loosing a lot of momentum. Its oscar buzz is dying down and it’s not doing great in the box office. Penelope cruz however is garnering serious buzz for volver. I think the best actress category will be a race between Helen mirren and penelope cruz.
I think that these predictions are way off. For
Best Picture the nomeniees would be Babel, Flags of our Fathers, The Queen, Dream Girls, Little Children
Best Director Alejandro Gonzalez Innarity-Babel,
Stephen Frears-The Queen, Clint Eastwood-Flags of Our Fathers.Martin Scorsese-The Departed
As of right now, I’m thinking it will be:
Babel, The Departed, Dreamgirls, Flags of Our Fathers, The Good German,
However, the Gotham Awards have been announced and they did do pretty good last year by dishing out some noms to Brokeback Mountain, Crash, Capote, and Good Night and Good Luck. So I guess they are the first step towards Oscar this year. here are their noms:
PICTURE:
The Departed
Half Nelson
Little Children
Marie Antoinette
Old Joy
ENSEMBLE:
Babel
For You Consideration
Little Miss Sunshine
A Prairie Home Companion
Shortbus
ACTING AWARD:
Abigail Breslin in “Little Miss Sunshine” (Fox Searchlight Pictures)
Shareeka Epps in “Half Nelson” (ThinkFilm)
Melinda Page Hamilton in “Sleeping Dogs Lie” (Roadside Attractions / Samuel Goldwyn Films)
Rinko Kikuchi in “Babel” (Paramount Vantage)
Channing Tatum in “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” (First Look Pictures)
Where’s Bobby and the prestige
What about Marie Antoniette and All the King´s men? I heard the are great candidates. Don´t forget WTC, and the male acting roles in Guerrilla
Oh no! Jennifer Connelly for Best Supporting Actress??? c’mom I prefer Sandra Bullock! (Infamous)
I’m gonna list who should win and be nominated:
Best Picture noms
-The Departed-Jack Nicholson… Matt Damon… Martin/Leo… just obvious oscar nom on this one.
-Flags of our fathers- The best war movie since Gladiator… must be nominated
-The good shepherd- Just looks tood good to be true… I hope it doesn’t win though.
-Marie Antoinette-representative of the (romance genra, of which this oscar must have)
*Little Miss Sunshine- The most beautiful movie i have ever seen, and i find it is getting drastically over looked.
director- the winner should be martin scorcesse obviously
lead actor- I concur(should be Matt Damon for the good shephard
lead actress-I will throw this out there=Natalie Portman for Goya’s Ghosts
supporting actor- no contest Steve Carell for Little Miss Sunshine
supporting actress–Abagail Breslin(allthough she is really the main- i think she sHOULD get supporting nom
screenplay- Little Miss Sunshine
obviously early for predictions, since the whole “momentum” thing hasn’t started yet, but i’ll make early predictions anyway:
picture–the departed
director–scorsese (bout time anyway)
actor–forest whitaker, the last king of scotland
actress–helen mirren, the queen
supporting actor–eddie murphy, dreamgirls
supporting actress–hard to say at this point, but i’ll say melanie lynskey, flags of our fathers (eastwood usually gets an oscar for atleast one of his cast members)
Best actress will go to Helen mirren for the movie THE QUEEN. The subject of the movie is enticing, the director is talented, critics love the movie and mirren is an old respectable actress with no oscar. This will definitely push the academy to give her the award. Besides, mirren is awesome. She just won an emmy last month for portraying a queen.
I saw little children at the toronto film fest and it was fantastic. Kate is sure to get a win.
Why didn’t you put dreamgirls in the running. I truly believe that this movie will be a rags to riches story and how can the acadamy ignore that.
I got three words for you: Little Miss Sunshine. It’s about time a comedy wins at the oscars again and this is it! Meet Crash’s comedic follower!
i think that sarah jessica parker should get an oscar nomination for her stunning performance[that's sure]in SPINNING INTO BUTTER./the movie is about people trying to express their feelings and encourage people to be who they really are.do not afraid the racism and only an actress like sarah jessica parker can play a part like that and make it from a leading role in a small independant movie to an oscar-making performance!
It has to be Kate Winslet’s year!!
love the site can weait for 2007
Well, some foreign pictures (“Life is Beautiful”, “Crouching Tiger”, Huidden Dragon”, and a Ingmar Bergman’s film) got a nom for best picture. I liked “Talk to her” and I hope to see “Volver” on November. If “Volver” is so successful as in Europe, who knows?
“Volver” will probably be the best of 2006 but the Academy will never give the big prize to a foreign language movie… never! They (the ‘members’) rather die!
okay yoall dont know nothing I tell you now that forrest withaker(last king of scotland) is next years best actor and kate winslet (little children)or annete benning (running with scissors)will either take best actrees
I think that Almodovar’s “Volver” will be one of the films of 2006.
Almodovar’s best film will be nominated (best picture, directing, lead actress -Penelope Cruz, screenplay).
Fearless might get some small awards like cinematography and i doubt the acadamy will give and oscar for Jet Li I agree about Flyboys I also think that James Franco could get a nod for his role in the film. Mean while the critics loved United 93 so i think that it might have an outside shot at a nomination
I think that Flyboys has a chance for some of the special effects awards. The flying scenes are supposed to be amazing. Fearless (“Huo Yuan Jia”) looks like a great martial arts movie. I don’t know if it will be able to cross over and also be considered a great film outside of its genre.
What about Flyboys with James Franco everyones predictions seem to forget about this movie and i also think that pirates of the carribean and Fearless would also be potential nominees just like United 93 and World Trade Center
2006/2007 Predix
Picture: Flags of Our Fathers
Director: Sophia Copolla ~ Marie-Antoinette
Actor: Ryan Phillippi ~ Flags of Our Ftahers or Marc Antony ~ El Cantante
Actress: Salma Hayek ~ Ask the Dusk or Jennifer Lopez ~ Bordertown
Supp Actor: Antonio Banderas ~ Bordertown
Supp Actress: Jennifer Lopez ~ El Cantante (more likely to win here than Actress) or Lindsay Lohan ~ A Prarie Home Companion (people don’t like her but her performance was great)
VOLVER. The best film of Pedro Almodovar. Penelope Cruz is great in this movie. The spanish critics and all press in cannes film festival said: NOMINATION FOR BEST ACTRESS.
Edward Norton is certainly a chance. He has been robbed in recent years and has a real chance with The Painted Veil.
what are youall crazy matt damon
everybody have to remember this film name: VOLVER. its the new film of pedro almodovar and in spain the reviews are superb. they said that is the best film of almodovar.(best director, best film, best original screemplay)
penelope cruz is brillant in the film (best actress)
With ‘Flags Of Our Fathers’ being touted as the one of the movies to feature in the 2007 Academy Awards, it would be great if Melanie Lynskey got nominated in the category of Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Pauline Harnois, the fiance(and later wife) of Rene Gagnon(played by Jesse Bradford).
I like the predictions but what about ‘Bordertown’? It stars Jennifer Lopez and Antonio Banderas. Lopez is a reporter investigating murders in the bordertown of Mexico and Banderas is (I Think) the villian. These two make movie magic. This movie reminds me of Silence of the Lambs and it won Picture, Actor, and Actress. Hopefully the Academy wil at least nominate Lopez for Actress and Banderas for Supp. Actor.
Dreamgirls is at least as much of a contender as any of those above. I’m not a fan but to deny its place as one of the top nominee contenders seems very wrong. Your opinion of The Departed conforms to what most people are assuming, i.e., that Scorsese will likely get a nod but the pic itself will be too ‘out there’ for the Big one. As for The Good Shepherd I don’t get the claims for this at all. Why would a story about the CIA be something that the Academy would go for? And DeNiro has established himself as nothing more than a middlingly competent director. Putting him up there as a sure fire nominee strikes me as a considerable stretch but, hey, they’re your predix … and your thoughts on Flags of our Fathers fail to point out one of the biggest factors in its favour; Steven Spielberg is producing and his own WW2 pic Saving Private Ryan famously lost Best Picture to Shakespeare In Love. The Academy will not have forgotten that and nor should you.
Yeah, well so far, the best movies out are Slither, V for vendetta, Inside man and Dave Chappele’s block party
Great SIte! Looking forward to updates. Thanks for the props to Jennifer Connelly.
Hopefully the academy will recognize her after the horrible snub for House of Sand and Fog.
