Once again, the Hollywood Foreign Press has shook up the Oscar race. “Spotlight” was expected to be the big winner Sunday night, but instead, it goes home empty handed. Instead, the wilderness revenge drama “The Revenant” goes home with the three biggest awards of the night: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor. Wow!

As we know, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu was last year’s awards stud, winning the Oscar for Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay. Could he do it again? Such an accomplishment would be mindboggling. No director has ever won back to back Best Pictures or Best Directors. It would arguably be the greatest achievement in the history of the Academy Awards.

But not so fast. Remember that the Globes don’t actually match up with the Oscars that well. Here are some of their past winners for Best Picture Drama: Babel, Atonement, The Social Network, Avatar, Boyhood. None of them won the Oscar.

So don’t start checking off “The Revenant” for your Oscar pool, but it definitely makes it a film to watch. The Oscars are about what people like and love, and it’s certainly possible more voters would be moved by the emotional journey of Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Revenant” than the truth-finding journey of “Spotlight.” Ladies and gentlemen, we have ourselves a race!
