It seems inconceivable that forty years have slipped past since the release of Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece The Godfather Part II (1974) a film somehow greater than the first, the Oscar winning Best Picture The Godfather (1972). An overnight success when The Godfather (1972) opened and became a massive box office hit which earned ten Academy Award nominations, Coppola was offered full control of a sequel if he would make one. The accolades that came with The Godfather (1972) included the Directors Guild of America Award for Best

As former Director of the Toronto Film School, I worry about the film educations of film buffs and students in North America. The fact is many of them have not seen a film made before the year they were born, which is frightening. I once asked a room of students who had seen Bonnie and Clyde (1967), the seminal film of the sixties, and a single hand shot up. Though it is highly unlikely Bruce Dern will win the Academy Award for Best Actor tonight, he can find solace in the fact an entire new generation of film goers and film students are re-discovering his performances from the seventies, and the fact his career has been given a huge boost. He has proven to be a tireless campaigner, doing every…
The first time I truly realized that the Academy Award does not always go to the true “best” in the respective categories was in 1974. Going into the big night I suspected that Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece The Godfather Part II (1974) would do very well, and I hoped that Al Pacino would win Best Actor for his brooding performance as Michael Corleone in that superb film.
