Avatar *** 1/2 out of ****

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Some Best Picture winners were small, brooding, character-driven dramas, such as Ordinary People or Million Dollar Baby. Some drew us in with their shocking screenplays, expressive violence and emotionally-wraught suspense, as in The Silence of the Lambs, The Departed, or No Country for Old Men. Still other films probably took home the Best Picture Oscar from a sheer creative, awe-inspiring, production-value standpoint (as long as they had a compelling story), a.k.a.: Chicago, The Return of the King, and, yes, Titanic. Then there were those rare movies that came along that possessed all of these qualities: Forrest Gump, Braveheart, Gladiator. Avatar…

Sandra Bullock, Jeff Bridges, Christoph Waltz, and Mo’Nique added to their awards season trophy cases with acting wins at the recent SAG awards.

The race for Oscar best picture continues without a clear front-runner. The Hurt Locker took home the prize at the PGA awards, although going into the awards it appeared that Avatar had more momentum.

SAG and PGA Predictions

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

The Screen Actor’s Guild and Producer’s Guild will announce their winners this Saturday night and Sunday night respectively. These awards come as a critical time, as the winners from last week’s Broadcast and Golden Globe awards seek to parlay their momentum into Oscar gold. The two hottest races at the moment are Best Picture and Best Actress. For Best Picture, Avatar has supplanted The Hurt Locker as the clear frontrunner. If Avatar triumphs at the PGA, the race could be very well over. Meanwhile, Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock tied at the Broadcast awards, and each took home a Golden…

Broadcast Award winners predictions

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Tomorrow night, the BFCA will announce their winners in all major categories. The Broadcast Awards, also referred to as the Critics Choice awards, are the first major awards show of the year. Their Best Picture winner instantly becomes the frontrunner to take home the Oscar. In the last two years, the winner was easy to predict. No Country for Old Men and Slumdog Millionaire pretty much swept all the awards. This year is different. There are three very good films all in the mix. Will it be Up in the Air, the clever dramedy starring the popular George Clooney, The…

Director's Guild nominations predictions

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

The Director’s Guild of America announce their nominees tomorrow morning. In the past, DGA nominations most closely match up with the Oscar Best Picture nominees. This year may be a little different since there are ten Best Picture nominees instead of five. Still, the DGA nominations are extremely significant. Most likely, the eventual Best Picture winner will come from this group. Here are our predictions:

Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
Jason Reitman, Up in the Air
James Cameron, Avatar
Quentin Tarantino, Inglorious Basterds
Lone Scherfig, An Education
