Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role

MERYL STREEP / Sister Aloysius Beauvier – DOUBT

Screen Actor's Guild Awards Predictions

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

On Sunday night, the SAG will weigh in on the big acting races. SAG winners have often gone on to win the Academy Award, and usually they correlate better than with the Golden Globes. Here are our predictions:

Best Actor – Sean Penn, Milk

He didn’t win many years ago for Mystic River and since he was brilliant in Milk, this may be his make-up award. Bu we’re still favoring Mickey Rourke to take home the Oscar

Best Actress – Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road

This is really interesting, because Kate is nominated for The Reader for…

Let's Introduce A Little Anarchy – The Academy Should Be Ashamed for Snubbing The Dark Knight

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Once again, The Academy proves that it is far outside the mainstream when it comes to recognizing the year’s best films. As they have done in recent years, well made, popular, blockbuster films have been ignored in favor of indie fare. The correlation between box office success and Academy nominations has become less and less every single year. Didn’t the Academy learn a thing when last year’s broadcast yielded the lowest television ratings of ALL TIME? Apparently not.

In a way, we are pleased that cutting edge, low budget, independent films are more recognized. It is a stark contrast…

Oscar Frenzy's Final Oscar Nominations Predictions

Monday, January 19th, 2009

And here we go. The Academy announces its complete list of nominations bright and early Thursday morning. Usually, even in extremely predictable years, there are always one or two surprises. Some of the key questions this year are whether or not Clint Eastwood gets a nod for perhaps his last acting role, if The Dark Knight can indeed become the first “comic book movie” to score a Best Picture nomination, and how well will the Academy embrace a small film like Slumdog Millionaire. Here are our predictions:

Best Picture:

Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Dark Knight
The Curious Case of…

Golden Globe Awards Predictions

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

This is a critical juncture in the Oscar race. After the Hollywood Foreign Press announces on Sunday night, things will either be a lot more clear, or even more jumbled. Let’s take a look at some key races.

Best Actor. Sean Penn has swept most of the critics awards. He won the Broadcast award on Thursday night. If he follows that up with a Globe win, he is virtually unstoppable. The best chance for an upset lies with either Frank Langella or Mickey Rourke. Rourke may not have the support of the larger Academy, but a Langella win would…

Broadcast Film Critics Awards Predictions

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

The BFCA holds their awards ceremony tonight and it will be huge. Ten films are up for Best Picture and the winner instantly becomes the frontrunner for the Oscar. In fact, the BFCA winner has often matched up with the eventual Oscar winner. Past winners include “The Departed,” “No Country For Old Men,” and “A Beautiful Mind.” The acting categories will also be interesting. In a wide open actress race, a frontrunner will finally be annointed. We’ll also see if Sean Penn can continue his hot streak as he plows forward toward a second Best Actor Oscar in five years…
