Screen Actor’s Guild Awards Predictions

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

Well folks, let’s hope this is not the only star-studded gala that we get to see this year. But you know some of these actors are thinking this is my best chance to deliver a moving speech. Now if they could only dispense with the stupid TV awards and get down to the races people really care about. Anyways, here are our predictions.

Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood

This is a no-brainer. We’d love to see Clooney upset, as he really delivered a hell of an understated performance, but Day-Lewis has all the momentum right…

A raise of the glass to Heath Ledger

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008
.!.

A raise of the glass to Heath Ledger, who, along with Leonardo DiCaprio, Ryan Gosling, and Christian Bale, hails as one of the most talented young actors of our time. He left us with many memorable and visceral roles such as Sonny Grotowski in “Monster’s Ball,” and William Thatcher in the admittedly fun “A Knight’s Tale.” Or, my personal favorite, the stout of heart Gabriel Martin in “The Patriot.” Anyone who has caught a glimpse of “The Dark Knight” teaser trailer will witness the most original and frighteningly psychotic comic-book villain, since, well, Jack. Then, of course, there’s his…

Initial Reactions to Oscar Nominations 2008

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

The 2008 Oscar nominations are finally upon us, and boy were there some surprises. Let’s take a snapshot approach to the announcements, a quick analysis on what transpired, and what lies ahead.

“Into The Wild” got screwed. This is story #1. Here’s a beautifully made film that led the Critics’ Choice awards in nominations, and scored DGA, WGA, and SAG honors. This morning, not only was it left out of Best Picture, but Sean Penn got the shaft for his direction, Emile Hirsch was overlooked, and Catherine Keener too. Did “Into The Wild” peak too soon with its October…

Golden Globe Awards Predictions

Saturday, January 12th, 2008

Well, what a shame. The never-ending writers’ strike has not only robbed us of an exciting season of 24, but now the Golden Globes as well. Of course, in recent years, the Golden Globes has lost some of its luster, due to the emergence of other awards shows and the Hollywood Foreign Press’ embrace of films that don’t fare so well at the Oscars. Still, a win at the Globes, particularly in the acting categories, gives a contender a solid boost. And who can forget such memorable moments as Jamie Foxx’s moving tribute to his late grandmother and Steve Carell’s…

Atonement (** out of ****)

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Writer-director Joe Wright’s adaptation of Ian McEwan’s novel “Atonement” is a handsomely mounted bore, equally beautiful and unsatisfying.

The first third of the film is set in Merchant Ivory’s stolid version of England; everyone’s rich, beautiful and bored. Briony Tallis (Saorise Ronan), a precocious 12-year-old, wiles away her days on her family’s estate, writing plays and irritating the servants. Briony’s older sister Cecilia (Keira Knightley) lies around on a fainting couch, smoking and pouting, because the hunky gardener Robbie Turner (James McAvoy) has not responded to her advances. Will the spoiled, sullen Cecilia get to sleep with the handsome…

Broadcast, DGA Predix and OscarFrenzy's revised Best Picture picks

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

First things first. The Broadcast Film Critics Association announces their awards on Monday night and this is the first major awards show of the year. Broadcast winners often match those of the Academy and at the very least, they determine who will be the season’s early frontrunners. Last year, The Departed won Best Picture, its first trophy en route for an Oscar win. They were also correct in every acting category except Supporting Actor (Eddie Murphy). Here are our predictions in the major categories.

Best Picture: Into The Wild
Best Director: Coens, No Country For Old Men
Best Actor…
