BAFTA Leaves Out Dreamgirls and Iwo Jima

Friday, January 12th, 2007

Both “Dreamgirls” and “Letters from Iwo Jima” failed to score nominations for best film at the BAFTA nominations today. The nominees for best picture are “Babel”, “The Departed”, “The Last King of Scotland”, “Little Miss Sunshine”, and “The Queen.”

“Little Miss Sunshine” did very well in the supporting actor categories. Abigail Breslin, Toni Colette, and Alan Arkin were all nominating for their supporting roles. “Casino Royale” also had a good showing at the nominations. Daniel Craig earned a best actor nomination and the film was also nominated for best adapted screenplay, outstanding British film of the year, achievement…

Broadcast Awards Predictions for Friday

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

The Oscar race is about to get real interesting this Friday when the Broadcast Film Critics Association, aka Critics Choice Awards, announce their winners. This is the first major awards show and all eyes will be on Best Picture. There are ten films nominated for the top award and the winner Friday will be instantly regarded as an Oscar frontrunner.

In the past films such as “A Beautiful Mind,” “Chicago,” and “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” all captured the Broadcast Best Picture prize. Obviously, all of those films went on to win the Academy Award…

DGA Goes On Without Eastwood

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

To all of our surprise, Clint Eastwood failed to score a nod by the Director’s Guild of America today: he was not nominated for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film. This throws a wrench in our theory that “Letters from Iwo Jima” is a front runner for best picture. For Your Consideration, And the Oscar Goes To Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy film , In Contention, and Oscar Watch have similar sentiments.

The popular consensus seems to be that Eastwood’s pain will be Martin Scorsese’s gain. Scorsese now can be considered a near-lock for best…

Director’s Guild Nominations Predictions

Monday, January 8th, 2007

Early tomorrow morning, the Director’s Guild of America will announce their five nominees. Why is this important? Well, for four years straight, the DGA has predicted the eventual Academy Award Best Picture nominees five for five. WOW! That is an incredible, even unbelievable track record.

This year, there may be some complications however. Best Picture contender “Little Miss Sunshine” is directed by two individuals (Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris). Now we’re not exactly sure what the DGA rules are, but something tells us we’re not going to see those two names on their top five list. Even if the…

"Bobby" Shines at SAG Nominations

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

Nominations were announced for the Screen Actors Guild awards today and “Bobby” earned its first major recognition with a nomination for best ensemble cast. The other four nominees for best ensemble cast are the usual suspects – “Babel”, “Departed”, “Dreamgirls”, and “Little Miss Sunshine.” Conspicuously absent from the list of nominees is “The Queen.”

For the individual accolades, Leonardo Dicaprio duplicated his Golden Globes performance by earning dual nominations for best actor and best supporting actor. On the female front, Helen Mirren and Jennifer Hudson each picked up another nomination to add to their collections.

The full…

Screen Actor's Guild nominations predictions

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the nominees for best ensemble at the Screen Actor’s Guild often mirror the eventual Oscar Best Picture nominees. After all, actors comprise of the largest branch of the Academy. In two of the last five years, the five SAG ensemble nominees matched Oscar five for five. Here are our predictions for 2007.

“Babel”
“The Departed”
“Dreamgirls”
“Little Children”
“Little Miss Sunshine”

Since the category is ensemble, films featuring an A-list cast are rarely overlooked. That being said, “Dreamgirls” and “The Departed” are as close to sure things as they come. “Little…

"Letters From Iwo Jima" left off Producer's Guild list

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

The Producer’s Guild of America announced their nominees for Best Picture a day early today. Typically, the PGA has a good track record of matching up with the eventual Oscar nominees although not as good as the Director’s Guild. This year. their choices were:

“Babel”
“The Departed”
“Dreamgirls”
“Little Miss Sunshine”
“The Queen”

The big surprise here is the omission of “Letters From Iwo Jima.” One possible reason for this could be the late release of “Letters,” as some members may have yet to see it or receive their screeners. If “Letters” appears on the DGA list next…

The REAL Oscar Race Begins

Monday, January 1st, 2007

Happy New Year everyone! While that giant ball has finally descended upon Times Square, another countdown is set to begin – the countdown to the 79th Academy Awards.

As you know, December is the month that gets things rolling. January is when it all comes together. December is the month of the critics. January is the month of the guilds. What is the difference, you may ask? Well it’s as simple as this. The guilds consist of actual Academy voters. No matter how much we love them, Roger Ebert and Kenneth Turan do not cast actual ballots. While there…
